As a group of egotistical, opinionated lawyers, we’re not easy to either impress or to make us change our minds or viewpoints. Phil didn’t overtly try to do so, and the strategy was to work with us rather than to confront our settled mindsets in order to bring us around. During the course of the day his empathetic and yet challenging style ensured that we not only bought into the programme but actively participated in it.

I had the pleasure of being a candidate on the Inclusive Leader course which was delivered by Phil Newman as the lead facilitator of the 8-month programme.
Phil was instrumental in creating a safe environment for candidates to explore a series of sensitive conversations. Through quickly building a positive relationship with the group, Phil was able to challenge the group’s thinking and provide us the freedom to experiment with a range of skills to navigate difficult conversations and scenarios.
I particularly enjoyed Phil’s approach, a warm, skilled and experienced individual who was deliberate in his delivery and challenged the ‘status quo’ of the sports sector and wider society. Through delivery of the programme, Sport Wales have continued to work with candidates to ensure we’re supporting partners across the sport sector to create inclusive leaders and deliver the vision for sport in Wales: An active nation where everyone can have a lifelong enjoyment of sport.

One of the best leadership sessions I have been part of, and I have been with my organisation for 26 yrs! The session provided a platform for us to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, learn that when it comes to people, our biases are not unconscious, and that allyship, mentorship and sponsorship are key requirements in helping underrepresented groups.
A definite recommendation for any organisation looking to hold up the mirror, as opposed to looking out the window, rounded off with the co-creation of interventions.
